The cervical cap works better with perfect use. This means the cervical cap is used correctly with each act of sex.

Most of the time, people don't use the cervical cap correctly or every time they have sex. This is called typical use.

The cervical cap works better for people who have never had a vaginal birth. This is because the cap will cover the cervix better and keep sperm out.

For people who have never given vaginal birth: With perfect use, 22 out of 100 people who use the cervical cap will get pregnant over a year. With typical use, 22 out of 100 people will get pregnant over a year.

For people who have given vaginal birth: With perfect use, 22 out of 100 will get pregnant over a year. With typical use, 29 out of 100 will get pregnant over a year.

You can also use another birth control method at the time of sex. We call this a Method Boost because it prevents pregnancy better than the cervical cap and spermicide alone. Method Boost options include the outer condom (penile), pull out, or the vaginal gel (Phexxi).

You can also use these as a Method Backup when you forget to put in the cervical cap before sex.

The cap covers the The lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. Some birth control methods, like cervical caps and diaphragms, cover the cervix to prevent pregnancy. FemCap is the only cervical cap sold in the United States. It comes in 3 sizes. The right size for you will depend on if you have given birth and how (C section or vaginal).

Put a teaspoon of spermicide gel in the FemCap. Use your fingers to slip the FemCap in your vagina and over the cervix. Put the cap in before sex and for at least 6 hours after sex. Do not leave the cervical cap in more than 2 days. The cervical cap can be washed and re-used.

The cervical cap will not affect your natural periods.

The cervical cap has no hormones. It is soft, latex free, easy to wash, and reusable. There is a small handle to help you put it in and take it out.

Once you put the cap in place, you and your partner should not be able to feel it. You can have sex as many times as you want while it is in place. The cervical cap should not be left in for more than 48 hours.

Some might find it hard to put the cervical cap in correctly.

The cervical cap should not be used during your period because it may not stay in place.

The cervical cap is very safe. For some, it can irritate the vagina.
